Plot[]

Katrina is brought in and is interrogated by Hank and Al who note on her variety of aliases and suspect they might find a few felonies when looking into them. Knowing they want something, Katrina asks why she was there and they reveal they want her son, requesting she call him to turn himself in but she states Ryan would never do something. However, Hank had anticipated that and says they can always use the back-up plan.

Knowing that Michael Zadra holds a grudge against Ryan, Intelligence decides to use this to their advantage. Hank and Al collect Zadra, offering him release if he helps them draw in Ryan. They show him Ryan's mother Katrina tied up in the trunk of a car, they take a picture of this and tell him to send it to Ryan, while demanding he comes with the money he owes if he wants to see his mother again. Zadra likes the plan but asks what he does if Ryan hates his mother, as Katrina becomes worried and Hank remarks then they're all done.

They then put the plan into action, with Kev acting as a bodyguard to Zadra who soon sees Ryan pull up with his friend Michael Cox. Ryan is livid his mother was taken, while Zadra notes that it sure caught his attention. Handing him a duffel bag with money, Ryan goes to the trunk to see his mother but finds it is Jay who arrests him.

At the precinct, Ryan is not talking to Kevin, so Hank goes to talk with his partner Mike Cox. Cox is being interrogated by Kim and Alvin before Hank walks in saying it is a good day for him. Hank tells him that the woman and child involved in a wreck that Ryan caused has said that the driver had black hair and since Cox has blonde hair, he can't be the culprit. Cox confesses to following and pistol-whipping Severide and says Ryan was the one who stole the mustang and drove it into the minivan – confirming Ryan killed the girl. He admits the two fled the scene after the accident. When Kim calls him out on his callous disregard, he casually reminds them that's all Ryan and he couldn't be the driver because of his hair. Outside Hank speaks with attorney Steve Kot, telling him that Cox confessed that Ryan killed the girl but Steve says they'll still get Cox because he is an accessory. Hank states that's fine with him, before asking about Severide and Steve reveals that Severide will be released because of this new evidence, as he made the call.

Afterward, Severide is exonerated and meets with Lindsay who congratulated him on being freed while telling him the perpetrators are being shipped to take his place. However, this is bittersweet for Severide who states even though he was not the one who committed the crime he was dangerously close to doing it by driving drunk and states he needs to get his act together before he actually does something he'll regret.

Quotes[]

Atwater: Honestly, he seemed a little freaked out that his ex-fiancée, who he still has feelings for, might be upstairs right beside him.

Burgess: It's crazy how one bad decision can ruin your whole life.

Halstead: I think you've got to start wrapping your head around the likelihood that Severide did this.

Voight: I'm not looking for the yes police. I'm looking for the real police. Which we both know you are.

Halstead: If I got plastered and I killed a little girl, I wouldn't deserve it.

Voight: Chloe James, the little girl in the back seat, she just died from her injuries. This just went from hit and run to vehicular homicide.

Lindsay: You're saying you blacked out?
Voight: From the car wreck?
Severide: No, because I wasn't in one.

Michael Zadra: What if he hates his mom?
Voight: Then we're all screwed.
