8:30 PM is the twelfth episode of the first season and the 12th overall episode of Chicago P.D.. It is the second part of a two-part One Chicago Crossover event with Chicago Fire. The event starts with A Dark Day concludes with 8:30 PM.

Summary[]

The Intelligence Unit races against the clock to hunt down the culprit behind the hospital bombing while Burgess awaits news about how her niece is doing.

Plot[]

The final hour of the crossover begins right where Chicago Fire left off - with Shay unconscious on the floor. Burgess and Atwater alert attendants and carry her to a room where medical staff work hard to help replenish the blood she lost and properly patch her wound. Shay wakes up later with Kelly Severide by her side, not happy about Shay's decision to keep the injury a secret. But now first responders outnumber the victims; Shay can relax and recover.

In ICU, Burgess' niece, Zoe, remains in serious need of a new liver, and somehow she's not even the worse case. Right next door to her lays Imogene, post-surgery, no longer registering any brain activity. The news makes it to her half-sister Holly and their parents: Imogene has a zero chance of life.

Outside, members of the Chicago PD's Intelligence unit consisting of Sergeant Hank Voight and Detectives Erin Lindsay, Jay Halstead, Antonio Dawson, Mia Sumners and Alvin Olinsky have arrived and are surveying the damage as Boden grimly reveals the extent of the explosion: 18 people are dead, 15 are in critical condition with three people still unaccounted for. Officer Adam Ruzek then arrives, informing Voight that the FBI Special Agent in Charge wants all the team leaders in the command Center with the rest of the Intelligence unit heading off to the meeting. As Voight prepares to leave, Boden tells him animals did this and as the two shake hands, Voight tells Boden, "We'll get 'em".

Voight and the rest of Intelligence receive an FBI briefing at the makeshift command center in the hospital. Leads are scarce despite dozens of witness and victim interviews until Jin pulls prints off the second bomb and ID's a Paul Watts. The team tracks him down... and finds him dead, in a murder dressed to look like a suicide. A list of his known associates triggers Olinsky's memory - he interviewed one of them and he lied to their faces. When they locate the suspect, Patrick Vaughn, the latter is trying to leave hospital, though he panics and takes Lindsay hostage with a knife to her neck. He refuses to back down, but thankfully firefighters Cruz and Mills blindside him from behind and free Lindsay. As a result, Lindsay elbows Vaughn in the face, knocking him to the ground and the squad detains him.

Hank and Olinsky take him away before Graff confronts them on the lead. Hank asks Graff for permission to interrogate his suspect. After some reluctance, the permission is granted with Graff telling Voight he's got twenty minutes and Vaughn finds himself detained in a room with the last person he'd want to see: a furious Hank Voight who informs Vaughn of the extent of the attack, even calling Vaughn a coward who plants bombs. He states if he cooperates then he won't endure the torture Voight will put him through, although Vaughn insists on receiving medical treatment before he discloses anything. With Olinsky standing guard outside, even casually eating a slice of an orange, Voight implements his no-holds-barred style of interrogation to learn the name of the bombing mastermind: Ted Powell, a major player in the anti-government fringe movement. Seeing his face, Voight states he saw Powell outside the hospital with the crowd earlier. Intelligence reports their finding to the other parties to discuss Powell.

Ten years ago, both the Chicago Fire Department and the Chicago Police Department attended a siege at the Powell family farm, one that resulted in Powell's mother dying and Frank, Ted's father being arrested. Turns out Powell knocked off Watts because Watts screwed up the bomb timing - it was supposed to detonate at 8:30 PM. As the team mulls this over, Powell issues an official statement on a fringe website: he has waited years for the system to release his father and admit their wrongs. When he saw that won't happen, he has decided to declare war on the fire and police departments and warns them it's just begun. He also declares relatives and friends of either departments are not safe from his crusade.

Antonio interviews Frank Powell, Ted's imprisoned father, to offer a deal in order to give up his son. It quickly becomes clear that Frank not only has zero interest in cooperating, but he's also an unrepentant racist who is proud of his son for making a stand. Seeing he has gotten nowhere; Antonio decides to leave but not before knocking over the chair that Frank is in for his racist comments. Antonio leaves the prison, satisfied seeing Frank groaning in pain.

However, a list of his recent visitors sparks another lead - and another dead body. This time it's in a warehouse that Jay and Ruzek enter through the roof, repelling down as Antonio and Olinsky on the rooftop. There, they also find evidence of a third bomb, likely hidden in a white van near police headquarters... and set to go off in half an hour, information they rely to their colleagues. Intelligence speeds downtown, locates the van - disguised with blue paint - and calls in the bomb squad to disarm it.

Adam soon realizes the Powell is a man who would like to see his handiwork carried out and knows he might be watching from somewhere. Surely enough, Antonio spots Powell on a roof nearby awaiting his big moment. Alerting Jay and Lindsay, they tell them to head for the building as they wait for Voight. Jay and Lindsay chase Powell through the building until he heads to the elevator. After Voight arrives, the crew go for Powell while the Sergeant has Sumner stay to handle the bomb while he and company jump into action, now on a race to detain Powell before the bomb detonates.

Intelligence ends up in a tense shootout on the roof until Voight bursts through and states they will bring him in alive to answer for his crimes, before he shoots Powell in the shoulder. Goaded by the insane criminal, Voight holds him over the edge of the roof and relents only when Sumner relays that they dismantled the bomb. Voight taunts Powell on his failure and slugs a smug Powell in the face for good measure, and Jay slaps on the cuffs for the wounded man. Intelligence proceeds to take the bomber away. Powell is subsequently transported by the cops. Graff compliments Voight on his successful arrest and the latter accepts it.

Finally able to relax, Lindsay drinks a beer at her apartment - only to have Kelly Severide knock on her door. This time she lets him inside and things heat up.
