Homecoming is the twenty-second and final episode of Season 5 of Chicago P.D. It is also the 106th episode of the series.

Summary[]

Tensions run high as Intelligence seeks justice for Olinsky after he is fatally stabbed in prison. Meanwhile, Antonio's loyalty is put to the test and Woods looks to take down Voight once and for all.

Plot[]

The episode starts right where Allegiance left off. Alvin is stabbed, and the EMTs are bringing him to the hospital. Meanwhile, Voight is at Woods' place to negotiate a deal. If he confesses to killing Kevin Bingham, all charges against Alvin will be dropped. Denny agrees to these terms and calls James Osha to discuss the details. As soon as Osha arrives, he begins recording their conversation regarding Kevin's death, but Voight gets a call regarding Al and rushes to the hospital. At the hospital, Voight arrives just in time to see Al being rushed into surgery. After a while of waiting, Voight asks one of the doctors how Al is doing, and they tell him that Al didn't make it. Shocked to hear this, he heads down to the waiting room and tells the team the news, Halstead and Atwater leaving the room while Antonio leans against the glass wall, Upton sits down on a chair, stunned while Voight and Ruzek comfort Burgess and Trudy respectively, the two groups embracing one another.

The team is deeply saddened to hear that their teammate and close friend just died. Voight tells the team that they need to focus on finding the person that did this to Al first, and then they can mourn his death. As Voight leaves the hospital, he is stopped by James Osha, asking how Al is. Voight tells him that Al is dead, and Osha tells him he had no choice, but Voight is still furious. Voight heads over to the prison and demands to get an office at the prison so that he and his team can find the person that killed Al. As the team set up their make-shift office, they go through any information regarding the cellmates who had a vendetta against Al. Jay tells the team that the weapon was a comb that was sharpened into a knife. Adam tells Voight that there was a guard who was with Al moments before he was stabbed. Dan Dietz, the friendly guard from Al's time in prison, tells Voight that he was escorting Al to his cell after dinner when someone attacked him. He didn't see the man as he got a phone call and had to walk away, but he assumed the person responsible was the cellmate that threatened to kill Al and his wife, Ross Gibson. Kevin and Voight interrogate Gibson, but he doesn't cooperate at first and says that Al deserved what he got. Voight loses his temper and chokes Gibson. He finally cracks and tells them that the person responsible for Al's death was Latino. Using that information, the team goes through the prison surveillance video. The video shows Dietz and Al walking towards his cell, then Dietz leaving him to take a phone call. Looking at another angle, the video shows Dietz walking away and pretending to have a phone call when he was just a lookout, meaning he was in on the stabbing.

Voight and Antonio go talk to Dietz, and he denies everything. They tell him that they checked his phone and that he had no phone calls during that time. They also reviewed his financials and saw that someone had deposited $5,000 into his checking account an hour before the attack. He finally cracks and tells Voight that he was just told to look away for a few seconds while Al was beaten. He had no idea Al would be stabbed. After some push, he reveals their suspect's name, Andre Valesco. Voight arrests Andre and brings him into a storage closet to talk. He asks Andre to tell him why he killed Al, but Andre instead tells him to kiss his ass. Voight starts brutally beating him inside while Adam and Antonio watch guard outside. After hearing the brutal beating, Antonio decides to call it quits and asks one of the guards to unlock the door, but Adam stops him and reminds him that the man inside killed Al. Voight opens the door and tells Antonio that he was just interrogating the prisoner, but he tried to attack him, so Voight was just protecting himself. Antonio confronts Voight and tells him that this isn't what Al would want. Voight tells him he should get off the case if he doesn't believe him.

The team heads back to the district to further investigate their case. They have identified Andre Gomez as the one who stabbed Al, but they think he stabbed Al because he was told to do so by someone outside the prison. They realize that someone on the outside wanted Al dead, so they contracted the hit. Voight asks Kim if she could box up Al's stuff whenever she is ready, and Kim hesitantly agrees. Meanwhile, Woods complains to Osha about how his plan failed. He wanted to use Al to get Voight to flip, but now Al is dead, and Voight is still a free man. Osha mentions how there is a witness named Kate from the night of the murder. Woods says he will talk to her, but Osha thinks it's a bad idea. Woods doesn't care and demands her information. Woods meets with Kate at a diner and asks her what she saw. She tells him how she and Kevin were hanging out that night when a cop showed up and dragged him outside. Woods shows a picture of Voight to her, and she confirms his identity. Woods asks why she is coming forward now, and she tells him how she kind of forgot about the incident but then saw the news and realized that she was sitting on some valuable information that could be worth something. Woods tells her that money won't be involved, but she stands her ground and tells him that she is broke and will only talk if she is paid $20,000.

Back at the district, Hailey tells the team that she got a lead. After checking security footage, she found out that Andre had two visitors in the past week, his mother and a guy posing to be his lawyer. After checking phone records, they identify the man as Alberto Flores. Voight, Adam, Antonio, and Hailey head to Alberto's place to talk to him. Adam and Voight are the first ones to find and arrest him. Antonio says he can bring Alberto back to the station, but Voight wants to talk to Alberto instead. Alberto tries to play it off, and things start to get ugly. Voight uses a baseball bat as leverage against Flores and tries to scare him. Alberto confesses to telling Andre to kill Alvin and tells Voight that Carlos DeLeon is the one that ordered the hit.

At the district, Kim tells the team about Carlos DeLeon, who has been on the FBI's radar for a while now. Jay tells the team that Al was helping the DEA once, and their target was Carlos DeLeon. During one of their raids, they arrested Carlos' little brother and tried to get him to flip on Carlos. While locked up, he was killed, and Carlos blamed Al for it. They go to Carlos' mansion and find his wife, Carmen, and his mother-in-law instead. They have an arrest warrant from Judge Wells and ask where he is. Carmen isn't very cooperative, which annoys Voight. Kim and Hailey decide to handle Carmen instead. Carmen is still non-cooperative, so the women use her mother against her. They make her choose between her loving mother or her murdering husband. Carmen chooses wisely and tells them that Carlos and his cousin left to go to his warehouse. The team head over there, and they split up. Carlos knows that they are there as cameras are everywhere. During their search, they are able to find and shoot multiple friends of Carlos. Eventually, Voight sees someone on the roof and tells Antonio to go in another direction while he goes up to the roof. On the roof, he corners Carlos, and Carlos tries to bribe him with money. Eventually, Voight shoots and kills him. Antonio comes up to the roof and asks what happened. Voight tells him that Carlos was reaching for his gun in his back pocket, so he shot him. After searching the body, Antonio finds the weapon stashed in the back. Some construction workers from a nearby building saw Voight shoot Carlos and yell at him, saying that they saw Carlos with his hands up. This confuses Antonio.

Back at the district, the team starts questioning Antonio about what happened. Antonio says he doesn't know what happened, as he showed up after the shooting. This frustrates Adam as Antonio isn't backing up their boss, especially after Al died. Antonio gets annoyed, and the two start to argue. Trudy comes upstairs and yells at them. She tells Antonio that Ivory Tower wants to talk to him about the DeLeon shooting. In front of the review board, Antonio is questioned, and he leaves. Voight is called next, and he tells the review board that he asked the suspect to raise his hands, but the suspect reached for his weapon instead. Being scared for his life, he had to shoot DeLeon.

Meanwhile, Woods meets up with Kate regarding her testimony. Woods pulls her into an alleyway and searches for a wire on her just to be safe. Woods tells her that she needs to make a few adjustments to her testimony in order to get the money. Kate hesitates on lying but agrees as she urgently needs cash. Woods gives her $10,000 now and $10,000 after she testifies. Once Kate leaves, he calls Voight and asks to meet. Later Voight meets up with him at his place, and they share a drink. Voight asks how things got so crazy between them, as they used to be friends and partners. Woods calls Voight the dirtiest cop in Chicago, but Voight reminds him that he isn't dirty. He does what needs to be done to make Chicago a better place. Denny claims that his only intention is to make Chicago better, but Voight knows it's a bluff. After all this time, Woods claims to still love him and decides to make a deal. Instead of 20 years in prison, Voight can get 7 years. Voight asks about the witness that came forward and asks if she is credible. Voight tells him he knows how he paid the witness money, $10,000 now and $10,000 later. Woods realizes that Voight had set him up just as the police show up to arrest Woods for bribing a witness. After the police cars pull away from Denny's place, Voight approaches a vehicle that belongs to James Osha. Kate is sitting in the passenger's seat. He thanks Osha and Kate for helping him take down Woods, and Osha shares his condolences with Voight.

The episode ends with Voight drinking alone and grieving the loss of his best friend, Alvin Olinsky.

Quotes[]

Voight: Let’s say, hypothetically, I confessed to killing the son of a bitch who murdered my son. I’d tell you I hunted Kevin Bingham like a dog, made him dig his own grave and then shot him in the face. I say that on the record, would that be enough to drop all charges against Olinsky?
Woods: I think it would.

Voight: I interrogated the prisoner. He was not cooperative. I am convinced he’s involved.
Dawson: For God's sake, Hank.
Voight: He tried to choke me with his handcuffs.

Flores: I can’t, he’ll kill me.
Voight: What do you think I’m gonna do?

Voight: You don’t get it, do you? After all this time.
Woods: Get what?
Voight: The difference between dirty and necessary. Like it or not, you and all your self-righteous friend in the ivory tower, you need people like me out on the streets. Doing the things regular cops aren’t willing to do. Going the extra mile to make sure the truly evil, the truly dangerous, go away. I thin the herd for the greater good.

Voight: You don’t give a damn about Chicago, you never did. You care about you, Denny Woods.
