New Normal is the first episode of Season 6 of Chicago P.D. It is also the 107th episode of the series.

Summary[]

Bad heroin is causing overdoses in Chicago, and Intelligence is a man down with Voight suspended. Antonio takes charge, but Ruzek undermines his authority.

Plot[]

After the death of Detective Alvin Olinsky, Voight closes himself off. The episode starts with Trudy coming over to Hank's house, finding him in the worst condition possible. His face is beaten up, alcohol is all over his house, and Trudy is shocked to see him like this. Trudy offers to help him, but Voight brushes it off and tells her to call Meredith, Olinsky's wife, to say that he will take care of the funeral.

Voight gets himself together and heads over to a crime scene where there are 5 ODs. Before Voight can get closer to the bodies, Deputy Superintendent Katherine Brennan gets there and benches Voight. She tells him that he is not allowed to work the case until COPA has cleared him from the DeLeon case from the previous episode. Voight is frustrated and calls Brennan out, claiming she is only benching him so she and her boss, Brian Kelton, can look good while burying an old-school white cop with a bad reputation. Brennan doesn't care what Voight thinks and benches him either way.

The team arrives at the crime scene, and Voight tells them how Antonio is taking the lead on this case while COPA clears his name. Adam is annoyed and calls Antonio out on not having Voight's back, but Voight stops them from quarreling and tells them to track down the bad dope. Back at the district, the team goes over the case. They discover that each OD is from heroin and battery acid, meaning someone is intentionally making drugs deadly. They know that the drug packages have a spider logo, which doesn't help much. Adam thinks they should ask Voight to get his thoughts on where to look, but Antonio is adamant about keeping Voight in the dark as he is benched. Hailey ran all the victim's phones and found that they all made calls to the same burner, most likely the dealer. They ping it and get a location. Adam and Hailey stake out and ID the dealer as Andre Thompson at the location. While waiting, Hailey tells Adam that he should let this Antonio thing go. Still, Adam gets defensive, claiming that Antonio chose his morals over his teammate, which he doesn't like. He especially doesn't like that Antonio isn't backing Voight when all Voight did was kill the man who killed Al. Hailey decides to drop it, and the two find out that Andre keeps his stash of dope in a deflated basketball. So, the team decides to move in. Jay pretends to be undercover and tries to buy drugs from Andre, but before Andre can get his stash, Kim and Kevin pull in and search both Jay and Andre. Using the distraction, Adam leaves the surveillance van and steals Andre's drugs from the basketball. Kevin and Kim decide to let the two men go, and Hailey and Adam watch as Andre discovers someone stole his drugs. Frustrated, Andre calls his supplier, and Hailey then tracks the call.

They arrest the supplier, Jaylon, and bring him back to the station. Burgess, Halstead, and Dawson interrogate him, threatening him with jail time, but get nothing out of him. Seeing how uncooperative Jaylon is, Adam decides to ask Voight for help. Voight is hesitant about going behind Antonio's back but decides to do some off-the-book investigation. At the district, Antonio tells the team to have patrol put up fliers regarding the ODs. Adam thinks this is a bad idea as demand usually increases when junkies find out about the ODs. Antonio thinks it better to be transparent, so they go with Antonio's idea. Before Adam can leave, Antonio reminds him that he needs to let the Al and Voight mess go so they can solve the case. Adam hesitantly agrees, claiming that Antonio is the boss.

Voight meets up with Adam again and tells him to talk to Phil Gamble as he is the shot-caller on the West Side. Before he leaves, Adam asks Voight how he is dealing with the COPA investigation, and Voight tells him that he will tell the truth. Later, Hailey and Adam talk to Phil Gamble at his bar and try to get him to talk. Clearly Phil isn't the one adding battery acid to the dope, but he knows who it is. Adam tries to get Phil a deal, but Phil stays quiet and politely asks them to leave. Adam and Hailey return to the bullpen and tell Antonio how they struck out with Phil. Antonio asks Adam who told them about Phil Gamble, but Adam won't reveal his source. Antonio realizes that Adam has been talking to Voight, which angers him. Hailey gets frustrated that Adam dragged her into his mess and tells him to leave her out of it.

Meanwhile, Voight goes back to the DeLeon crime scene and finds out that there is a surveillance camera that points directly to where the shooting happened. Scared he might find something, he asks the building manager if he can see the footage, but it's too late; COPA already came by earlier and got the copy. Voight goes to Brennan's office and asks her if he can see the footage. Brennan lies and tells him that there is no footage. Seeing how she lied, Voight realizes that the footage showed a good shoot.

Back at the district, Kim gets a call from Meredith asking the team to be the pallbearers for Al's funeral. Antonio asks Trudy if they can get more patrol officers to search the city, and Trudy says she will try. Jay goes through Jaylan's phone and finds that he had made 22 calls to some burner in Pilsen. Kevin runs the burner and gets a name, Ernesto Varga. Kevin and Adam go to his home and find him dead. While clearing the house, they find Ernesto's son hiding in his bedroom with a gun. The kid shoots at the officers, and Kevin tries to talk the kid down. Adam doesn't listen and starts yelling at the kid to drop his weapon, which scares him even more. Kevin finally gets the kid to calm down, and Adam takes the gun out of his hand. Later, as the crime techs work on the scene, Kevin asks Adam why he was so heated with the kid. Adam confesses how he couldn't bear losing another friend this week. Back at the district, Adam and Kevin show Jaylon the picture of Ernesto's dead body. They know that Ernesto and Jaylon are working together, but they don't know where the stash house is. Jaylon continues to keep his mouth shut, which frustrates Adam. Adam gets aggressive and physical, but before anything can happen, Antonio stops him. He tells Kevin to go book Jaylon and tells Adam to cool off.

Adam tells Antonio how things would have been different if Voight were here. The two start to yell at each other, and Trudy yells at them to stop. She tells the team how there are three more ODs, and Antonio tells the team to check it out. Adam meets up with Voight again and tells him how Jaylon is being uncooperative. Voight tells him he will handle it, telling Adam to be with Jaylon in 30 minutes when he calls, and Adam agrees. Back at the district, Brennan asks Antonio for an update regarding the case, and Antonio assures her that the team is trying their best to find the dope. Brennan doesn't care how hard they work as long as they find the drugs before more bodies are found.

After talking to Adam, Voight sneaks into Jaylon's girlfriend's house and calls Adam. With Voight on the line, Adam goes to Jaylon's holding cell and shows him the phone. Voight talks to Jaylon and threatens to burn all of his girlfriend's money if he doesn't tell him where the stash house is. Jaylon finally talks and gives Adam a location. Back in the bullpen, Adam tells the team that Jaylon confessed. Antonio is confused about how he got the information as Jaylon lawyered up. Still, with the pressure from Brennan, Antonio begrudgingly allows the team to hit the location. Later, after the team find the spider-labeled dope and arrest the men making it, Antonio confronts Adam about going behind his back and not obeying orders. Adam doesn't want to explain himself and tells Antonio to back off. The two get into a physical fight which the team later stops.

Later, Voight meets up with his friend, Detective Franny Quinn, at a bar to see the footage from the building. The video shows Voight shooting DeLeon after he reaches for his weapon, ruling the shooting as clean. Antonio confronts Voight and asks why he went behind his back during the case. Voight tells him how he needs Antonio to be clean and wants him to follow his morals so they can get the job done, which Antonio understands. Later Brennan meets up with Voight to congratulate him on solving the case. Antonio had already told her how the case wouldn't have been solved if Voight hadn't stepped him. Kate also tells Voight there was footage and how with her help, Voight can be cleared from the DeLeon case. Brennan asks Voight to support Kelton for mayor and to be her "friend". Voight says he can be Kate's "friend" if she gets Alvin Olinsky a letter of exoneration. Kate says she will try her best and leaves.

Now that Voight is cleared, he returns to the district, and the team is happy to have him back, especially Adam. Voight reminds the team how the past few days, a lot has happened, but they need to be a team moving forward, and everybody agrees. Later as Voight gets ready for Al's funeral, Trudy shows up at his house and tells him how Meredith would prefer if he did not attend the funeral. Voight understands and decides to watch from afar as Intelligence and the rest of CPD bury the deceased detective.
